Waiting for the Transplant
By K.B. Kincer
Flat, the sunlight in January, neither too bright
nor too pale; flat, the hours and minutes and seconds,
neither too slow nor too fast and the sky at night,
vistas of eternity, of the past; flat as a favorite journal
unopened, flat as the road to Birmingham, as narcotic stupor
and the long hallway floor under the hospital bed
rolling toward the elevator, flat as the blue cloth
draped over the table over the shuddering ventilator.
