Preface to Poetic Examples
The three poems that follow, “Scar,” “Innocent,” and “Iridescence,” mark Christine’s poetic journey, her evolution into insight in writing about her son’s congenital heart defect. Presented in chronological order as they were written over the course of twelve years between 1997 and 2009, the poems provide examples of her thoughts about how early efforts with poem fragments, sentiment, and telling about something can evolve with experience and attention to craft. Poems can take a reader on a journey when they begin with a single truth and evolve into insight. They become art.
