Fate Atwist

    by Sarah Bigham

I don’t get out much

these days

from our house

where I count pills and take naps and curl into the pain.

So hard to explain to those without hurt,

whose broken bones and

broken hearts

have healed with casts and time

and

chocolate.

I have time, too much, in fact,

hours

spent contemplating how this has happened, and

what I have become--

twisted and writhing,

gnarled and fevering.

What I once held in my

palm has spun

aloft,

reflecting back during full moons

as my mother takes my hand, gazing down and

comforting as mothers do, no matter the age of their children.

No matter.
