Gladys and the Saints

Like a tiny bird she enfolds me in bubbled laughters of love

as we talk of new stories

        and long-held secrets.

Teeming lifetimes of hopes and hurts cross wires and networks

neither of us understand

        but believe.

Our time together spent in comfortable chairs

with  men out of doors

        and soup long since eaten.

We dream of a place where aches disappear

and minds recollect

        all the pages of life.

We call to the saints, Gladys and I,

leaning on rituals that become

        my own faith.
